The Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India (GoI) has established the National Testing Agency (NTA) as an independent, autonomous, and self-sustained premier testing organization under the Societies Registration Act (1860) for conducting efficient, transparent, and international standardized tests in order to assess the competency of candidates for admission to premier higher education institutions with a mission to improve equity and quality in education by developing and administering research-based valid, reliable, efficient, transparent, fair and international level assessments.

The Joint Entrance Examination, JEE (Main) comprises two papers. 

Paper 1 is conducted for admission to Undergraduate Engineering Programs (B.E/B.Tech.) at NITs, IIITs, other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), and Institutions/Universities funded/recognized by participating State Governments.

JEE (Main) is also an eligibility test for JEE (Advanced), which is conducted for admission to IITs. 

Paper 2 is conducted for admission to B. Arch and B. Planning courses in the country.

The JEE (Main) generally conducted in 02 (two) sessions for admissions in the next academic session.

The candidates will thus benefit in the following ways:

• This will give two opportunities to the candidates to improve their scores in the examination if they are not able to give their best in one attempt.
• In the first attempt, the students will get a first-hand experience of taking an examination and will know their mistakes which they can improve while attempting for the second time. § This will reduce the chances of dropping a year and droppers would not have to waste an entire year.
• If anyone missed the examination due to reasons beyond control (such as the Board examination), then he/she will not have to wait for one entire year. §

A candidate need not appear in both Sessions. However, if a candidate appears in more than one Session then his/her best of the JEE (Main) NTA Scores will be considered for preparation of the Merit List/ Ranking.  

Mode of Examination:

JEE (Main) will be conducted in the following modes:

1. a) Paper 1 (B.E. /B. Tech.) in “Computer Based Test (CBT)” mode only.
2. b) Paper 2

A (B. Arch): Mathematics (Part-I) and Aptitude Test (Part-II) in “Computer Based Test (CBT)” mode only and Drawing Test (Part-III) in pen and paper (offline) mode, to be attempted on drawing sheet of A4 size. c) Paper 2

B (B. Planning): Mathematics (Part-I), Aptitude Test (Part-II), and Planning-Based Questions (Part-III) in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode only.

JEE Exam Pattern

   *Each Subject will have two sections.

Section A will be of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) and Section B will contain Questions whose answers are to be filled in as a numerical value.

In Section B, students have to attempt any 05 (five) questions out of 10.

There will be negative marking for both Section A and Section B.

JEE – ADVANCE

Through JEE (Advanced), IITs offer admission into undergraduate courses leading to a Bachelors, Integrated Masters, Bachelor-Master Dual Degree in Engineering, Sciences, or Architecture. Both Bachelors and Masters degrees are awarded to candidates enrolled in the dual degree programs upon successful completion of the course curriculum requirements. In some of the IITs, students enrolled into the 4-year Bachelors program have the option to pursue B.Tech. (Honors) and/or B.Tech. with Minors. Dual Degree students may also pursue a Minor. Further, in some IITs, B.Tech. students also have the option to pursue Interdisciplinary Dual Degree, with Bachelors in the parent Department and Masters in some other Department. All the above options require fulfilment of certain academic performance related criteria. The types of academic programs offered at IITs and their minimum duration are given below*

Eligibility Criteria for Indian Nationals Appearing for JEE (Advanced)

Candidates should be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) in B.E./B.Tech. paper of JEE (Main) 2023. The percentages of various categories of candidates to be shortlisted are: 10% for GEN-EWS, 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, and the remaining 40.5% is OPEN for all. Within each of these five categories, 5% horizontal reservation is available for PwD candidates.

Number of attempts:

A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) maximum of two times in two consecutive years.

JEE Exam pattern:  computer-based mode.

• JEE Advanced consists of 2 papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2), and candidates have to appear for both papers. 
• Total Time Duration 3 hours for each paper (4 hours for PwD candidates)

Both papers will have 3 sections:

Marking Scheme: The exam has a concept of full, partial and zero marks.
